Hamilton College, a small liberal-arts college in Clinton, NY, had a distinguished record in the Civil War. Many of Hamilton's graduates and students took up arms and fought, for North and South. Studying in the hotbed of abolitionism that was Central New York, Hamilton students, aged 17 to 23, dropped their books and picked up the musket to preserve the Union and to spread freedom to every corner of the nation.
