Letters of Lt. Rush Palmer Cady (97th NY State Infantry Regiment)

Description

This is a collection of letters written either by or to Lt. Rush P. Cady (1841-1863) during his service with the 97th New York State Volunteer Infantry Regiment (Third Oneida; Boonville Regiment; Conkling Rifles) and documents related to his life and military service.

Biography

Rush P. Cady was born in about 1838 and grew up in Oneida county, New York, the son of Daniel and Fidelia W. Cady of Rome, New York. He attend Hamilton College from 1858 to 1860 (class of '62). He left school to volunteer for service with the U.S. Army in the American Civil War and served with the 97th New York Infantry Regiment. He died on July 1, 1863, at the age of 21, the first day of the battle of Gettysburg. For a moving account of his life and death, see Sketch of life of Rush Palmer Cady.

Digitization

These letters were digitized by Backstage Library Works of Orem, Utah at 600 dpi, saved as uncompressed TIFF. They delivered to Hamilton College the TIFF images and JPEG derivatives.

Transcriptions of the letters were made by Backstage Library Works who also encoded them as TEI (P5) files.
