This is a 70-page diary kept by John Humphrey, a private in the 117th New York State Infantry Regiment (Fourth Oneida Regiment) during the American Civil War. The original 70-page diary is held by the Archives of Hamilton College.

Biographical Information

John Humphrey, Jr. was born on September 15, 1845 in Marcy, Oneida county, New York, son of John and Ann Humphrey. On July 22, 1862, at the age of 19, he volunteered for service with the U.S. Army at Utica, New York, and became a member of the 117th New York State Infantry Regiment, Company B. John Humphrey was in the Battle of Drewrys Bluff Coal Harbor, Petersburg Fort Gilmore Darby Town Road and Fort Fisher, Honorably discharged June 8th 1865. P.O. Address: Deerfield, Oneida County, New York.
