So far we have been able to identify only one letter in our collection directly related to the 116th Regiment.

Biography

Leroy Russell was born in 1848, the son of Warren R. and Sarah M. Russell of Evans, New York. On August 30, 1862, at the age of only 14, Leroy enlisted for the U.S. Army. A few days later he mustered in as a private in Company K of the 116th New York State Infantry Regiment. A year later, on September 26, 1863, he was promoted to commissary sergeant and was discharged on May 1, 1865 at Buffalo, New York.
